Driver health and welfare: A call for evidence

The APPG for Freight and Logistics has launched a new call for evidence examining the health and welfare of HGV and vocational drivers and what more can be done to support a healthier workforce.

The call for evidence was launched by APPG Chair Rachel Taylor MP at the Driving Better Health event on 4th September 2026, bringing together representatives from across the freight and logistics sector to discuss the health challenges facing professional drivers and the action needed to address them.

Professional drivers play an essential role in keeping the UK economy moving, but the nature of the job can create particular challenges for maintaining good physical and mental health. Long and irregular working hours, extended periods of sitting, time spent away from home and limited access to healthy food, exercise and appropriate facilities can all have an impact.

The APPG wants to better understand these challenges, the support currently available to drivers and where further action may be needed from government, industry and other organisations.

Evidence submitted through this process will inform the APPG's work on driver health and welfare, including a report setting out our conclusions and recommendations to government among others.

We are inviting views on the following areas:

  • The main physical and mental health challenges facing HGV drivers, and how these affect drivers throughout their careers.

  • The barriers that can prevent drivers from accessing healthcare or managing their health effectively, including the processes for assessing and managing fitness to drive.

  • The impact of working conditions on driver health and welfare, including working hours, access to roadside facilities, healthy food, rest and exercise.

  • Examples of good practice from employers, industry bodies or other organisations that are improving driver health and wellbeing.

  • What further action government, regulators, employers and the wider freight and logistics sector should take to improve driver health and welfare.

We welcome submissions from across the freight and logistics sector, including individual drivers, employers, trade associations, unions, health professionals, charities and other organisations with relevant experience or expertise.

When submitting a response, organisations should include a brief explanation of their work and indicate whether they are happy to be named in any report or other output produced by the APPG.

Submissions are open until Friday 9th October 2026 and should be sent to the group's secretariat at rha@pagefield.com.
