Freight and Logistics APPG welcomes announced deal to overhaul Channel Tunnel rail freight site

The APPG for Freight and Logistics welcomes the announcement of a Government-backed deal to transform a Channel Tunnel rail freight terminal in east London.

A £15 million private investment will be made in the site with the aim of operating as an international logistics hub.

This will help support the return of regular freight trains carrying cargo in containers that can be transferred across rail, road and sea, via the Channel Tunnel.

The investment will improve links to with France, Germany, Italy and Spain to import goods including fresh fruit and vegetables direct from growers, and export popular UK-made consumer goods.

Ferdy Willans, Public Affairs Manager at the RHA, commented on behalf of the APPG saying:

“The Channel Tunnel is one of the most important links the UK’s logistics industry has to the rest of the world. We welcome this investment as a key element of improving freight flows through the Channel Tunnel and reducing congestion in Dover.”
